1980, in a Kenyan village. One night, Wanjiru sees her mother coming back home with shiny eyes from amazing news: a woman, Wangari Maathai, invites women villagers to join a reforestation movement: the Movement of the Green Belt. Together, they'll plant trees, learn how to grow seeds, and get paid for each tree that survives. Wanjiru listens and is fascinated. For the first time, she imagines a different future. But is it really possible to plant a forest?
Let's go back to the engagement of Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to get a Nobel Peace Prize, for her contribution to sustainability and democracy. This collective commitment, full of hope, reminds us that anyone has the power to get involved and make change happen.
