After many months at sea, the old captain has finally come home to his fishing village.
As the news of his return spreads, the village children rush to his house. They’re eager to hear him spin yarns about his adventures at sea. But not Zoe. She isn’t interested in seafaring stories. In fact, she won’t so much as set foot on a boat. She won’t even dip a toe in the water. Zoe, who has lived in a fishing village all her life, is afraid of the sea.
When the captain opens the door of his small house, he’s met with a surprise: the children are already waiting for him! Yes, even Zoe. She can’t help but be curious.
From his comfortable chair, which he has sorely missed during his many months at sea, the captain tells the children the most amazing story any of them have ever heard. The instant he’s finished, the room erupts with the sound of their voices. “Were you able to go to the end of the oceans?” one of them asks. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The captain bursts into laughter. But then he turns serious. “To sail to the end of the oceans is terribly difficult, my dear children,” he says. “There are many challenges. And even if you overcome them—even if you reach your destination—the magic bottle containing the elixir is guarded by a ferocious monster that no one has ever been able to defeat.” “Nonsense!“ “There’s no such thing as monsters,” exclaims one of the boys, getting to his feet. “Let’s go outside and play in the snow.”
