A very long summer by Niels Thorez and Cécile Serres by Lirabelle
After the long winter, the sun’s rays awaken the people of the Far North and free the fishing boats which have lain emprisoned in the ice. The seamen from the village leave their brightly painted houses that nestle at the foot of the hill and busy themselves down in the harbour. They sing and dance !
But Niels, sitting on the wooden jetty, feels anxious. A bird has told him that the snowmen are melting and that the neighbouring mountains are losing their thick white coats. Niels turns towards the horizon and says to himself that one day, perhaps, it will be too warm for polar bears...
On the tundra, the arctic fox is hunting hares and voles. Reindeer are moving quickly out to the green pastures and the geese have arrived earlier than usual. None of them has had sight or sound of the polar bear, for he is busy out on the ice
Just like every year, Sven hears the call of the north pole. The bear knows that there is little time to lose : the ice will not last forever. So he redoubles his efforts and hunts tirelessly. But the seals are not cooperating! One of them, sleek and fat, has just escaped through a hole in the ice.
